It's hard to decide where to begin telling the
story of Gregory's life and especially difficult to
write this so readers will be inspired and not
saddened. As you read please know that we
are a family determined to survive with a
positive attitude always, thanking God for
everything, blaming no one, making
"Every Day a Good Day".
Gregory and his sister, Kaitlyn, are carriers
of a rare genetic condition called Li-Fraumeni
Syndrome. It was discovered a few years ago when a simple blood test was performed after
their biological father was diagnosed with an extremely rare brain tumor. In 1992 Gregory
being diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma was thought to be a "fluke" and treated
as such by the physicians. In 1997 when Greg, Sr. was diagnosed with a Choroid Plexus
Carcinoma, one of 65 adults in the world to be affected, the wheels began to turn in my head
thinking it was more, thus prompting me to ask if there was something hereditary. The
results were devastating when we learned that both the children, Gregory and Kaitlyn, were
carriers of a gene predisposing them to cancer. In a nutshell everyone's P 53 gene has two
normal sides which fights tumors and cancer. Theirs has one normal side and one
abnormal side giving them both a 50% greater chance of developing cancer.
Gregory and Kaitlyn have both fought cancer. He in 1992 and in
2005. She in 2000, with a diagnosis of ALL, Acute Lymphocyte
Leukemia. At ages 18 and 15 they both understand the importance
of living a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and exercise as well
as keeping a positive spiritual attitude throughout. I am elated to
report that Kaitlyn is cancer-free and healthy in 2007 and that Gregory
is maintaining a remarkable positive attitude that he will once again
win the battle against cancer living life to it's fullest for himself and
other's. When their father, Greg, Sr., passed away in 2001 from AML,
Acute Myeloid Leukemia, I made him a promise I intend on keeping:
that I would care for his children and help the fight to discover cures
for cancer for the benefit of other's. This promise has been passed
to my children now that they are older and they too intend on serving
the community supporting cancer research and children who suffer
from this devastating diagnosis. But the children have taken this one
step further realizing that it is not just cancer that children suffer from
but other ailments that alter lives. It is both Gregory and Kaitlyn's
desire to help change the lives of children who are dealing with a
life changing situation by inspiring them to maintain a positive
attitude towards life and their circumstances. They are both living
proof that this is a huge part of the puzzle for survival both physically
and mentally.
As for me, their Mother, I will not lie and say that this has been an easy road with my faith
never wavering. I certainly have my moments of despair and fear asking questions of "why?"
It is during
those moments I return to my roots of my
own upbringing recalling my Mother
saying to me when I was a small child
that when a negative thought enters my
head I should replace it with a positive
one to keep myself strong. These are
very powerful words I have passed along
to my children to help them maintain a
strong positive attitude for survival. I
strongly believe that with a healthy
positive psyche and strong faith in God
we can get through the toughest of times
and we certainly have proven that fact
by our history.
Thank you for supporting Gregory's web
site. Your support will echo endlessly and
spread goodness to other children who face life altering challenges in their lives helping
them maintain their positive attitude.
Peace and Blessings to each and everyone of you for happiness and good health,
Ann
